As Windows 10 is finalized, Microsoft has released a new build for Windows Insiders. This release is notable and different from previous releases because Windows 10 build is from the RTM Release to Manufacturing branch. So, you will not find a watermark on the desktop in this build and the user experience will be like the final version of Windows Windows 10 build was released for Fast Ring Insiders.
Microsoft is going to release it for Slow Ring Insiders as well. At the moment of this writing, there are no official ISO images available. You can download them with confidence. So, what you can expect from the release build?
Actually, Windows 10 build does not have many changes to the GUI. All the changes are under the hood, since Microsoft is mainly focused now on bug fixes. Besides stability and performance improvements, this release features an improved version of the Microsoft Edge browser. If you are not interested in installing Windows 10 from scratch, you can upgrade your current Windows 10 version using Windows Update. Microsoft says this build will get a few more updates for Windows and the Store apps in the near future, as work on them is in progress.

Also now since this is close to RTM, if installed will windows future updates will be just the KB files or will it be few more builds pushed again? It must be KBs, not whole build. But who knows?
This is a must for people like me that are booting windows from a USB HDD not thumb as windows will not install to a usb drive. Freedom from company filters and bullshit!

From that ‘Windows 10 Insider Preview is intended to be installed on genuine Windows 10 devices — before upgrading to Windows 10 Insider Preview Builds or reinstalling Windows 10 please ensure your device is activated’. What is the current state of your Desktop? Does it have Windows 10?
If so does it load, is it activated, what build is it? So if you have a PC that is not working like the laptop you mentioned the options would be to buy a copy of Windows 10 although I would advise you to double check the laptop is compatible with Windows 10 before doing that. You could contact the laptop manufacturer to get recovery disks to return it to the previous Windows Vista in this case I believe or you may have recovery disks for it.
You could buy a copy of Windows 8 again checking it is compatible and install that. Then once installed and updated use the free upgrade option for Windows 8 to upgrade it to Windows 10 that could be potentially a little cheaper but more work to do.
Hope that helps. Be interested to know the current state of the desktop as that may give other options to get back to the previous Windows. Regards about my laptop, it also running with Vista Home but I don’t think I will invest any new copy of Windows 8 or 10 on it due to old laptop, it runs so slow like turtle, I will prefer to buy a new laptop comes with Windows Well it sounds like you have a way forward and a plan so good to hear.
Not sure if I get this right but both systems are still working with Vista? So I would think perhaps something in the desktop is not compatible with Windows A slightly different thought regarding Windows It will install and run non-activated. The main limitation is personalisation is blocked, and as time goes on further restrictions may apply. A complete curve ball, if the old Vista laptop is still good hardware wise then perhaps give Linux Mint a try on it for a test or to have a look.
Can try it without installing, just boot of the media, it has Firefox and Libre Office built in so good for basic stuff and the install is slick no Linux knowledge required. Regarding installed on IDE drive with the desktop machine, I also have thought about it; maybe the error came from corrupted file with hardware when I downloaded or converted from ISO file to USB stick.
Last, I saw the link somewhere mentioned about if the drive being used with Windows 10, regardless working or not working with installation, the drive no longer working even using old method with fdisk to clean up the drive and format, is this true? In a early build last year some drives where affected by windows going into sleep mode after setup and the drive not ‘waking’. That could be resolved. That was fixed quickly in the next build. Perhaps this is what the link was referring too? I do not think the download of the ISO or transfer to USB is the problem, most likely the install would fail during the install in that situation, not on the restart afterwards. On Vista can you see the IDE drive as well?
That again would take sometime. My thinking your install error could just be as likely due to incompatible hardware, so perhaps it would happen again on the desktop with a new drive.
